Outreach

As a graduate student at Berkeley, Colin taught science lessons to local elementary school students through the Bay Area Scientists Inspiring Students (BASIS) program. He designed two lessons for 5th grade classrooms, “states of matter” and “electricity and magnetism,” and—together with fellow Long group members— taught these lessons in over 60 classrooms over five years. Colin also participated in “Keeping Students Engaged in Science,” a curriculum development program for Oakland middle-school teachers. He especially enjoys building science demonstrations for outreach; previous projects include a jumping ring apparatus and a miniature “electric train.”

Colin plans to continue working with BASIS and other outreach programs at Berkeley, and he hopes to get the rest of the Gould Lab involved too!
